the five pillars of islam

There are five main foundational pillars when it comes to Islam, and as a new Muslim it is important to learn them. You’re not expected to be perfect from day 1 and practice every single pillar with no mistakes (even muslims that have been practising for years can struggle with keeping up with all aspects of Islam sometimes), but it’s important to understand the overall expectations so you can set your goals.

first pillar

Shahada

The Shahada is the first and most important pillar of Islam. It is the foundational statement of faith that brings a person into the fold of Islam.

second pillar

salah

Salah (prayer) is the most essential act of worship after the Shahada. It connects Muslims with Allah through regular, structured communication and is performed five times daily.

third pillar

ramadan

Ramadan is a special month in Islam, filled with immense blessings, mercy, and opportunities for spiritual growth. It is a time when Muslims focus on self-reflection, self-discipline, and deepening their connection with Allah.

fourth pillar

zakat

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and it is an essential act of worship and charity. It’s a prescribed form of almsgiving, where Muslims give a portion of their wealth to those in need. The word “zakat” means “purification” and “growth”.

fifth pillar

hajj

Hajj is a deeply spiritual journey that every Muslim who is physically and financially able must undertake at least once in their lifetime. Hajj is an act of worship and a way to seek closeness to Allah.
